Here in Rhode Island, we celebrate our favorite bivalve by devoting this whole week to clams.
I’m looking forward to wading out into Narragansett Bay with my bull rake and dragging in some littlenecks (the small ones about an inch) and cherrystones (about 2 inches). Talk about locally grown food!
Haven’t found that many chowder clams (the huge ones), but I’m willing to look. One of my favorite pleasures is after collecting my half-bushel, setting on shore with the clam knife and eating a half dozen raw. Yum!
Over the years, I’ve written and performed several clam stories. Two of these are available now:
“The Great Rhode Island Clam Shake. ” which just came out on the Rhody Radio Podcast with another story “Roger Williams vs. The Big Blue Bugs”. These tall tales are family friendly. “The Clam Shake” was recorded at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick during Sharing the Fire in 2009
Click here to listen!“The Vampire Clams of Narragansett Bay” - is a really creepy tale about terror from the shallows. It is only available in the limited edition chapbook, A Dead Politician, an Undead Clam and An Ancient Horror. This lovely slim volume is often subtitled, “Three Rhode Island Legends”. (Audiobook coming soon!)
It’s NOT for children, and NOT available on amazon, and there are only 50 (or so) left, so if you’d like a signed copy, click here to purchase.
Let me know what your favorite clam story is.
